Things Found and Made

Self Portrait/Wi’thar The Growing Monarch Shifting Between Worlds

2020

Photo, paint, performance art

7x5 inches

An instinctual pose for a character, Wi’thar The Growing Monarch, from a mythological world I’ve created and explore in my art, film, music and stories. I painted on the photo to play around with the image, and accidentally smudged the paint. But the remaining look immediately resonated and I left it like that. It felt like it captured something of the character, in a different way than I had conceived, something of myself, and a blend of both.

A Little Bit About The Artist

A Statement From The Artist

Things Found and Made is a multidisciplinary artist playfully exploring the imagination and rummaging around in the human condition, blending artwork, film, music, zines, performance and storytelling.

Creating different worlds and moments as part of an expansive concept, Things Found and Made is interested in the infinite potential of perception and creativity, hidden layers of reality, film music and art, well-being and our connection with nature and beyond.

And how all the links between these, could mean more connectivity and harmony both externally between each other, and also within.

What is your favourite movie or Tv Show?

I don’t have 1 fave thing, but something that stands out straight away and still resonates is Twin Peaks, for its surreal blend of dreams, nightmares and the everyday. And also particularly for me, it’s the playfulness of it all….and the endearing and esoteric Detective Cooper.

What's is your biggest influence for your practice?

Cinema and music are big influences, as well as comedy and metaphysical stuff about the nature of reality and the infinite nature of creativity - so a mix of pop culture and esoterica. And just a lot of horror, sci fi, and fantasy elements in tv, film, literature and music videos have had a big influence. And I should give a mention to various incarnations of Journey To The West, Alice in Wonderland, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen… and the rotoscoped elements of Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings, which I saw at a young age, and had a really dream/nightmare textured effect on me. It felt like real magic, I had no idea what was going on, but I knew I loved it.

Who is your fave surrealist artists (Historic or contemporary)?

My favourite surreal artists would be filmmakers really, people like Monty Pythons, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch, Karel Zeman, Jean Cocteau - and the team behind the 1960’s Yokai Ghosts trilogy. Folks who blend reality in a variety of ways, expanding what’s creatively possible, be it playful, poetic, allegorical, or beyond. I also think for me, the worlds of horror, fantasy and sci fi in film are playgrounds of the surreal, they just often get labelled purely as genre works. So people like Carpenter, Argento, Bava, Hooper, the first films of Ridley Scott, and many more are faves for that reason, having a dream like element to their work. I’m not well versed in surreal artists and would like to discover more, though the lesson we had on Dali at school is the only artist based lesson I can remember, and it’s one that immediately stood out and resonated in some way, and feels like a precursor for my affinity with the surreal.
