A Little Bit About The Artist

A Statement From The Artist

Indonesian Horror figures often come from folklore; Either it is used as a tool to scare children into behaving, a real tragedy that happens at some time, or a cover-up story to rewrite history. This one in particular, has all of those three elements. Ni Garwa was once Ningsih Garwati, an innocent woman who was accused of being a Communist in the 60s. All because her name resembles one of the communist organisations called Gerwani (Indonesian Women's Movement). She was raped by multiple gang members, until she ended her life. So the story was twisted. Now she’s portrayed as a woman who died of a broken heart after being left by her lover. Those pictures were meant to represent the lost footage or the reenactment of the young men who encountered Ni Garwa; so that her real story could be told. But nothing is for certain.
