Self portrait as a clown. I think I was mocking myself here and the types of paintings I make. A caricature of myself almost! It was also a response to some feedback I received about my art work.

A Little Bit About The Artist

A Statement From The Artist

My paintings are mostly inspired by subject matter that’s usually considered lowbrow or trashy, but what I consider to be important cultural reference points. I take a lot of influence from film and TV as well as posters and book and video cover art from the '70s and '80s. I enjoy exploring familiar tropes and clichés, combining them with themes of nostalgia and memories—some real, some imagined. I construct my own scenes and work from my own photographs. I love using dramatic, coloured lighting and cheap, throwaway textures and objects—things that are immediately recognisable but often associated with a lack of taste. My work explores, reflects and reimagines my own experiences of growing up in the 80s and 90s and a lot of the things I was exposed to: far, far too much TV, Point Horror books and a lot of McDonald's.

Do you like scary movies? And if so which ones?

I adore the horror genre and a night in with a horror film is pure comfort for me. For me the 1980s was the best genre for horror films because they were really pushing the boundaries in some really crass and schlocky ways, which I love. Favourites are - Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons and Basket Case. Realistically though, my favourites list is about 100 films deep.

Who's your fave Final Girl and why?

They're all fantastic!! But if I was forced to choose one it would be Ellen Ripley. What a woman.

What is the biggest influence in your practice?

Film, film posters and trashy book cover art.
