Brighton-based Artist Estelle began her journey into the world of artistic expression with a profound exploration of the human psyche and the enigmatic depths of the subconscious. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of emotions, dreams, and fears that dwell within the human experience, she channels her observations into a diverse array of mediums, from painting and illustration to digital art and installations. Her artwork embodies a fusion of darkness and surrealism, inviting us into a realm where reality intertwines with the fantastical, each piece imbued with a haunting beauty that captivates the imagination. From ethereal landscapes shrouded in mist to haunting figures that seem to gaze into the soul, her art transcends the ordinary, inviting viewers to confront their own innermost fears and desires, to embrace the darkness that resides within us all.
Speaking
With Spinner
Interviewer: Daisy-Drew Smith
I had the pleasure of sitting down for a chat with Estelle Spinner this month, to discuss her practice and ask her a couple of questions.
Smith
What's your favorite color?
Spinner
Oh, green. 100%. It’s kind of like a bit of a joke, because everything I own is green. Pretty much.
Yeah, I gravitate towards it.
Smith
What's your favorite shape?
Spinner
Probably a star.
I think my name actually means star, so maybe that's why.
Smith
Okay, next one, another random one. And then we'll get less random as it goes down.
What's your favorite type of hat?
Spinner
Oh, my God. I'm really not a hat person. I always found that when I wore one, I had an unusually small head as well. Like, I have a size head of like an 11 year old. So probably like a pirate hat.
Smith
What's your favorite movie or like top four movies because I realise as it's quite a hard question.
00:06:03:00 - 00:06:08:07
Spinner
So The Shining was like my number one team of all time. Then Nightmare Before Christmas. Because that's so nostalgic for me. That was like my childhood. Donnie Darko, I love that film as well.
Coraline, because I literally saw it in the cinema two days ago, and it was like everything I've ever wanted, I saw it in 3D and brought me back to when I was like 12 and saw it in the cinema for the first time, and I was like, oh my God, like changed my life.
Smith
Such good top choices.
So, my next question was actually going to be; what is your favorite scary movie?
Spinner
Oh man. I mean, I've already mentioned the Shining. I have quite a few. I pretty much exclusively only watch horror films or I mean, that's pretty much it. Or like a true crime documentary.
Psychological horror is like my favorite kind. I love classics like The Shining or Psycho.
Like, I love The Others. That's a beautiful film. And, the Village as well. Those have got a similar big twists in the script.
Smith
This is a more arty question. So what is your kind of main inspiration for your art?
Spinner
I think like nature, just like the outside world. I think that's where I get most of my inspiration. Like if I'm ever in a bit of a rut or I don't really know what to do, like I, because quite a lot of my paintings are like landscapes, I'll kind of go to the woods or go somewhere that's like something that I draw inspiration from.
I love Gothic architecture. So like, I love a good church graveyard, that type of thing. Just like. Yeah, and taking photos and getting inspiration that way, I think is probably the main. That's like where a lot of my work begins is from a place over the edge or like a walk I've been on or a place that I've seen.
Smith
So, okay, another fun one. If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Spinner
Oh, I think I'd go to Norway. I've wanted to go to Norway for so long I've never been. And it just looks amazing. Like I'd love to do, like, a road trip. Maybe not this time of year, but, like, maybe kind of winter to spring time when you can, like, see the northern lights and yeah, just spend time in nature, in the forest, in the mountains.
Smith
Yeah, that sounds perfect, to be honest. And kind of similar. What would be your kind of idea of a perfect day?
Spinner
I want to go and, like, explore somewhere, like be in nature, maybe go somewhere I haven't been before. Like, I want to really, like a long walk.
Maybe go for a swim or something, like find a little pond or stream or the sea. I feel like living in Brighton has made me really appreciate, like, freshwater swimming or just going out and swimming all the time now.
I think just being a nature being maybe like, I like the evening being on a bonfire, that type of thing, just being outside for sure.
Smith
If you had limitless funding for an art project, just all the money in the world, what would you make?
Spinner
I've always wanted to hire out or renovate like an old abandoned like church or cathedral or something and turn it into, like, a big gallery installation space with, like, lots of different artists and all kind of giving them maybe like a wall or an area or something of the, of the church and letting them just go wild and like, just make. And, like, using it is, like an opportunity to kind of bring something new to, like, maybe buildings that wouldn't necessarily be used.
Smith
We have one last question, and it's another weird random one. For a fun one to end the questioning. If you could drink only one liquid forever, what would you choose?
Spinner
Oh my God, that is a question, I can say that has never been asked before. Okay, it might take me a while to think, one drink and I can have water.
I don't know, some sort of, like a cocktail. Maybe like a fruity cocktail. Maybe just like a margarita, because then I can be hydrated. And then I could also go out and have fun.
