The Nuckelavee
Lino print on paper
2026
30 x 15 cm
£28
An Orcadian myth, the Nuckelavee is a half-man, half-horse creature. It has no skin, absurdly long arms and large hands, with one glowing eye on top of the horse's head illuminating the smoke that billows from its jaws. Every autumn as the Sea Mithir grows weak, the spirit of Winter, Teran, takes control and unleashes the Nuckelavee to spread death, disease and despair across the land.

A Little Bit About The Artist
A Statement From The Artist
I studied at the Tramway Visual Arts Studio in Glasgow where I fell in love with printmaking, before getting my degree in illustration at the University of Edinburgh. I carried on printmaking while I ventured into digital art, where I focus more on editorial and board game illustration. My print work mainly revolves around folklore and botany, with an emphasis on pattern. Growing up I was always either reading or drawing with my brain in other worlds, and some of my favourite memories are of my grandad (a printmaker himself) telling me stories before bed, so I have always been drawn towards myth and folk tales. I find it interesting to see how the people before us explained the world around them, and how these tales passed down through time, adapting to reflect the current societal beliefs, values, and fears.
What's your fave Gothic movie?
I love anything to do with vampires, but I wrote my dissertation on the 1922 and 1979 Nosferatu movies, so I'd have to go with one of them!
Who or what is the biggest influence in your practice?
Scottish folklore and stories! I created this print after reading Tom Muir's 'Scottish Folk Tales of Coast and Sea', because I loved his description of the Nuckelavee.
