A Little Bit About The Artist

A Statement From The Artist

My work consists of ornate, sculpted panel paintings that transform imagination into tangible form. Each piece begins as a drawing and evolves through an intricate process of cutting, filing, sculpting and painting wooden shapes in both oil and acrylic. These individual elements are assembled into layered compositions, finished with varnish, resin, and various embellishments to create richly textured, theatrical artworks. Rooted in themes of dream-like surrealism, my works serve as immersive dioramas - palpable artifacts from imagined, figurative worlds with illustrative narratives that feel both familiar and fantastical. They are an invitation to enter spaces of wonder, curiosity and reverie.

Influenced by Neo-Baroque opulence, Victorian aesthetics, the kitsch, pop-surrealism, fairytales, and the gothic botanical, my practice celebrates craftsmanship, materiality, and aesthetic excess. Embracing the philosophy of art for art’s sake, I view the beautiful and the fanciful as essential to the human experience - and as a vital tool for escapism and enrichment. Through a devotion to detail and a reverence for the decorative, I aim to create works that blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and theatre - objects that stand as both art and artifact, that are playful and alluring, existing in their own mythology as portals to beyond the everyday.

Sweeney Todd

Who or what is the biggest influence in your practice?

I of course draw from a huge range of influences, but if I had to focus on one core driving force it would simply be (at the risk of sounding cheesy), imagination and human's ability to create. Therefore I find myself being immensely inspired by objects, buildings, textiles, storytelling, performances ect that showcase and record our collective creativity. In terms of Artists, i discovered Mark Ryden when I was young which unveiled my love of lowbrow art, but I have always loved and followed painters from a range of styles - usually there is some sort of narrative element to their practice or a unique approach to materiality.
